Harriet Beecher Stowe

 Harriet Beecher Stowe (June 14, 1811 – July 1, 1896) was an American  abolitionist and author.

 Stowe's novel  Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852) depicted life for African-Americans under slavery; it reached millions as a novel and play, and became influential in the

United States and United Kingdom and made the political issues of the 1850s regarding slavery

tangible to millions, energizing anti-slavery forces in the American North, while provoking

widespread anger in the South. Upon meeting Stowe, Abraham Lincoln allegedly remarked,

"So you're the little lady who started this great war!"  The quote is regarded as apocryphal
　出生于康涅狄格州的斯托夫人，是哈特福德女子学院（Hartford Female Academy）的一名教师，同时，她也是一位积极的废奴主义者。全书围绕着一位久经苦难的黑奴汤姆叔叔的故事展开，并描述了他与他身边人——均为奴隶与奴隶主——的经历。这部感伤小说深刻地描绘出了奴隶制度残酷的本质；并认为基督徒的爱可以战胜由奴役人类同胞所带来的种种伤害。 1850年，美国通过了第二部《逃亡奴隶法》，将协助奴隶逃亡定为非法行为予以惩处，并限缩逃亡者与自由黑人所拥有的权利；为了回应这部法律，斯托夫人写成了这部小说。小说的绝大部分都是在缅因州的不伦瑞克镇完成的；斯托夫人的丈夫卡尔文·斯托（Calvin Stowe）在任教于当地他的母校鲍登大学。
